The ascent of Puy de Sancy can be done from Mont-Dore, Super Besse or Chastreix resorts. The fastest way is the 4.4 miles route (7.2 km) via Mont-Dore through the Chastreix-Sancy Nature Reserve. Accessible from the end of spring to autumn, it covers 1,791 ft (546 m) of elevation gain over a rather demanding 3h30 loop. It crosses a turbulent relief between the waterfalls giving rise to the Dore and the Dogne streams and steeply sloped valleys.
