The Anabaptists of Alsace

0
In the 17th century, a movement rejected the way of life of the Anabaptist community in Alsace. Jacob Amann, known as the patriarch advocated greater rigor and less sartorial ostentation. He gathered followers who took the name of Jacob Amann's Party, or Amish, in 1693. The inhabitants of Riquewihr called them Daïfer (who refuse baptism). The Anabaptists were discreet and settled where no one wanted to. They worked hard and cleared wastelands. They gained fame in breeding and innovated in animal care. After Louis XIV's decree ousting them from the kingdom, many, including Amann's followers, left for the Netherlands and then for America, where they founded Amish communities.
