The African elephant moves on its toes and walks the amble. Its 5 fingers are internal, only the nails are visible. The number of nails varies from usually 5 to front legs to 3 to rear ones. The forefeet are larger, they allow to better support the weight of the head, the trunk and the tusks. Able to run fairly quickly, the elephant climbs steep slopes easily.
