Testing an opponent's strength
2

These two male giraffes are challenging each other through a ritual fight called necking. Although giraffes are not territorial, they establish with these fights a kind of local hierarchy, usually based on size and on age, within small temporary groups of bachelors. These duels are not violent but allow the males to test their opponent's strength. But while fighting for a female in oestrus, fights may be very violent.
