The Explorers
Rangiroa Atoll is a few meters high and completely flat outgrowth from the summit of an underwater volcanic mountain. It consists of hundreds of motu, only two of which are permanently inhabited, separated by dozens of 'ho'a' (small channels) and by two large passes (that of Tiputa and that of Avatoru). Its total land area is 49sqmi (79km2).
