Reef terraces of the raised atolls of the Loyalty Islands

The Loyalty Islands form a chain of five atolls aligned on a northwest/southeast axis parallel to Grande-Terre. Four of the five atolls (Maré in the photo, Lifou, Ouvéa, Beautemps-Beaupré) are raised, up to 459ft (140m) for Maré, the highest. All have fringing or barrier reefs and are characterized by a flat central depression and a peripheral ridge modified on its external slope by the presence of reef terraces.
