Maré reef terraces and the lithospheric bulge of the Australian plate
1
0
The evolution of the reef terraces of Maré is linked to the dynamics of the Australian plate bordered by a peripheral lithospheric bulge located about a hundred kilometers (62mi) northeast of the island. The terraces layout constitutes the recording of the passage of the atoll above the bulge : the inclination directions, first southwest then horizontally and finally northeast, correspond to its ascent on the western slope before its descent on the eastern one.
