Located on the coast between Arromanches and Grandcamp-Maisy, the Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer overlooks Omaha Beach. Ten squares of impeccable graves remind us that here lie 9,387 soldiers, 307 of whom are unknown. On 6 June 1944, 1,573 soldiers died on Omaha beach, 552 of whom belonged to the 29th Infantry Division and 518 to the 1st Infantry Division (US Army). The American Cemetery is maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), whose first chairman was General John J. Pershing (1860-1948), commander of the American Expeditionary Force in the First World War.
