Gambier islands are made of high islands surrounded by a unique coral belt. Taravai nowadays shelters only half-dozen of inhabitants, lovers of quietness and nature. However, vestiges of the past endure like the Saint-Gabriel church (in the background). It was built on the orders of Father Laval who converted the Gambier to Christianity in the XIXth century.
