To make a tapa, the bark is beaten a first time and folded in two. It is then beaten in the vertical direction to soften its fibers. It is eventually unwound to be beaten again using the increasingly finer grooved faces of the beater. This inhabitant of Fatu Hiva repeats the operation until she obtains the desired fineness.
