Take-off and landing

To get this large being (1 to 1.20 m high) off the ground, momentum is needed. The Common Crane (Grus grus) will therefore run for a few metres spreading its wings and then push off on its very powerful legs. For the landing, these large birds can be seen slowing down and letting their long legs dangle in anticipation of a clean touchdown. The first, clumsy fledging of the 2-month-olds takes place between mid-July and the end of August in the nesting areas. The family remains together until the end of winter.
