The ancient Polynesians punctuated the paths leading to passes with single red hibiscus, Aute maohi or Aute raau, which appear on the drawings of Sydney Parkinson, James Cook's companion on his first trip to Polynesia in 1769. The double red aute and many species of different colors were introduced in the mid-19thC when hybridization allowed the creation of new varieties with exceptional shapes and colors.
