The Polynesian waters abound with bluestriped snappers (Lutjanus kasmira), called 'taape' in Polynesian, which gather in large schools near the coasts and on the reefs up to 820ft (250m) deep. Carnivorious, they feed on fish and crustaceans. Unlike most other fish, they go from a solitary state in juvenile age to a gregarious state in adulthood.
