Genuine sealskins were once used by indigenous peoples of the Arctic for skiing. These skins were ideal because their short, uniform hair provided good gliding in one direction and very good resistance in the other. In the 1960s’, the first self-adhesive skins appeared, preventing snow from getting between the ski and the skin. Nowadays mohair or synthetic skins have replaced authentic ones, though they are still called sealskins.
