Symbolism of the shell necklace

The polynesian shell necklace traditionally offered to departing people borrows the symbolism of the hermit crab which changes shell when it grows, uses empty shells to protect itself and even dislodges their occupants. The Tahitian tradition has developed this symbolism by bringing together in the shell necklace the various shells by which the hermit crab is passed.
