Symbol of France's industrial power

The Eiffel Tower, built for the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris, marks the rise of French industrial power in the 19th century. Some 1,023 ft (312 m) high, it was the highlight of the event and became the tallest monument in the world. The Eiffel Tower illustrated French know-how and fitted perfectly with the main theme of the Universal Exhibition: the progress of science and technology since the Revolution. The event exalted the triumph of metallic architecture and the mastery of steam and electricity.
