The humid forest on limestone soil ecosystem remains widely represented in the Loyalty Islands, which have 1,180sqmi (1,900km2) of limestone soil. The forest is much less degraded on the island of Lifou than on the neighboring islands of Ouvéa and Maré. The ecological homogeneity of its environment (low altitude, recent and little varied substrates) make it fairly uniform in appearance even if it is made of 223 species, 117 of which are endemic and 76 subservient to this habitat.
