The Haut-Kœnigsbourg castle overlooks the whole Alsace plain between the Vosges mountains and the Black Forest. During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, it monitored the commercial road that extended at its foot, near the village of Orschwiller. It already existed in Celtic and Roman times, as attested by a landmark that still stands at the exit of the locality. Nowadays, no threat weighs upon the Wine Route that crosses Alsace.
