The European lynx is monitored by the Office Français de la Biodiversité (French Office for Biodiversity) (OFB). The first release of around twenty Carpathian lynxes (Lynx lynx carpathicus) took place in Switzerland in the 1970s. Some gradually moved to the nearby Jura mountains in early 1980. Several individuals are present in the south of the massif, in the east along the border, and in the west as far as the Bresse plain. Some have also been spotted in the Doubs department.
