On a volcano considered active

Near the locality of Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise, Lake Pavin occupies the maar crater of a volcano whose last eruption was some 6,700 years ago. The volcano is therefore considered active according to the definition of the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Some researchers even claim that it may have been the site of a volcanic activity dating back to only 700 to 800 years.
