The corniches, the sugar loaf village, the privileged view on the Mediterranean, and the climate of Èze have attracted illustrious writers and philosophers. In December 1883, Friedrich Nietzsche, then 39 years old and syphilitic, arrived by train at Èze-sur-Mer station and spent six months in the wonderful Moorish village of Eza, built among the rocks where he regained his health and wrote his third Zarathustra. Today, a mule track called the Nietzsche trail allows visitors to hike a drop of 1,312 ft (400 m). It follows the footsteps of the philosopher who found inspiration for his Old and New Tables as he climbed from the station to the village.
