On the heights of Orschwiller

The name Haut-Kœnigsbourg originates from the German word Hohkönigsburg translated as the king's high castle. Standing on the heights of the village of Orschwiller, it monitors the plain of Alsace. From up there, it is not uncommon to catch sight of the snow-capped summits of the Alps. The 12th-century fortress, typical of medieval castles, was partially destroyed and rebuilt several times. The last renovation happened from 1900 to 1908 under the supervision of German Emperor Wilhelm II. Today, the Haut-Kœnigsbourg is classified as a Historic Monument.
