The Quatre Dauphin fountain gave its name to the square in the center of which it was built at the intersection of Rue Cardinale and Rue du Quatre-Septembre on the major crossroads of the Mazarin district in Aix-en-Provence. It replaced the project of a statue of Cardinal Jules Mazarin, Louis XIV's minister. Created by Jean-Claude Rambot and Pierre Pavillon in 1667, the fountain represents four architectural dolphins surrounding an obelisk originally crowned by a statue of Saint Michael to which succeeded a fleur-de-lys, a Maltese cross, and eventually a pine cone.
