On Marseille's highest hill

Located at an altitude of 515 ft (157 m) near the Vieux-Port (Old Port) on the city's highest hill, which became a site of pilgrimage as early as the 13th century, Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde Basilica offers a bird's-eye view of Marseille, of which it has become the symbol. The bell tower of the monument culminates 134 ft (41 m) higher. From 1892 to 1967, a funicular climbed 262 ft (80 m) from Rue Jules Moulet. Today, many paths punctuated with stairs leave from the foot of the hill and go up to the basilica, which can also be reached by bus or thanks to Marseille's little tourist train.
