The Wettsteinbrücke (Wettstein Bridge) is the second oldest Rhine bridge in the Swiss city of Basel. In February 1876, the Basel construction department submitted a feasible project for an inclined Harzgrabenbrücke (Harzgraben Bridge). The greatest challenge for the bridge construction at this point was the difference in height between the two Basel sides of the Rhine, which was solved with a bridge gradient of 2.7 %. It was not until 1881 that the Harzgraben Bridge received its official name, the Wettstein Bridge, in memory of Mayor Johann Rudolf Wettstein (1594–1666). In May 1990, the citizens of Basel approved the bridge renovation project by Bischoff and Rüegg in a referendum. Finally, the Great Council (Cantonal Parliament) decided in favor of the renovation project. A new Wettstein Bridge as it is today with a total length of 327 meters was built from 1991 using the two stream piers.
