Ideally, a vine is planted in the autumn or early spring. Vines should not grow on land that is too fertile, because then the vegetation grows more than the grapes. The species most commonly cultivated for its grapes is Vitis vinifera. Good fruit requires sun and warmth. The grapes, even when ripe, can remain on the vine for up to two weeks. The harvest of the vines can therefore be staggered.
