The geological substratum of the Monts Dore region – where the Chaudefour forest (photo) is located – is a mixture of loose siliceous rocks (49.2%), volcanic rocks (33.5%) and metamorphic rocks. Forests are predominantly present (88.8%) on loamy soils with varied humus such as moder or hemimoder (42%), dysmull or oligomull (26%) and dysmoder or mor (14.1%).
