The thirteen islands currently emerging from the Marquesas Islands form one of the five archipelagos of French Polynesia. They were created by the Marquesas hotspot, like various other submarine volcanic structures of varying depths, ranging from high islands with submerged reefs, to submerged atolls or isolated seamounts. They thus provide the scientific divers with additional exploration sites.
