An experiment in maintaining the Mediterranean forest thanks to large herbivores like European bison is being led since 2005 by Patrice Longour (photo), the founder of the Monts d’Azur Reserve. It has resulted in the return of a herbaceous layer significantly reducing the risk of fire spread. In addition, the hardwood stand has been strengthened and diversified by planting species better adapted to climate change and producing wild fruits and berries.
