Alsatian architecture was influenced by Germanic architecture. The half-timbered houses resulting from this inspiration are the traditional Alsatian home. They are frequently adorned with local or family symbols, such as a coat of arms. The emblems are most often affixed on the doors or on the timber used to build the half-timberings. Each has a specific meaning. It can indicate that an important character resides there (Mann). It can also be a sign of fertility (cross of Saint Andrew) or femininity (rhombus).
