Pandanus braiders prepare the strands according to the objects to be braided. They tear each leaf lengthwise with a needle to cut strands which can range from 0.07in (2mm) to the width of the leaf. They can also dye pandanus leaves by cooking them in water added with pine bark (aito) to obtain a brown color used in the making of baskets or hats.
