Despite their very different appearance, stingrays have a lot in common with sharks, notably their cartilaginous skeleton, their gill slits, their spiracles and their fins. The most obvious differences are the shape of their strongly flattened body with large pectoral fins attached to the trunk and the ventral location of their gill slits while they are located on the flanks in sharks. For some scientists, rays would directly descend from sharks.
