The 'exsul' subspecies of the Fairy Tern (Sternula nereis) is endemic to New Caledonia where between 100 and 150 pairs would still remain. Classified as a vulnerable species by Birdlife International, the Fairy Terns lay one to two eggs per year and have become dependent on protected nesting areas to reproduce, hence the prohibition of access to certain portions of Caledonian beaches in an attempt to promote the reproduction of this endangered bird.
