Two bronze equestrian statues from 1927 stand on the front of the facade of the Sacré-Coeur Basilica. They are the work of Hippolyte Lefebvre and convey an impression of strength and serenity. On the west side, King St Louis brandishes his sword point downwards as if to confirm that this land is Christian. On the east side, it is Joan of Arc who also brandishes her sword, points upwards as before leaving to assault the English armies in Orleans.
