Built on an ideal rocky outcrop overlooking the Alsace plain at an altitude of more than 2,260 ft (750 m), the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle watches the roads extending below. Built in 1147, it witnessed numerous battles and changed owners many times throughout the centuries. Restored by the German Emperor Wilhelm II from 1900 to 1908, the fortress reintegrated France after its victory during World War I. Its longevity makes it a symbol of the tumultuous history of Alsace.
