Stakes instead of tables

This photo shows the vertical bouchots (stakes) used for mussel farming at Utah Beach in the Manche department. These vertical bouchots, which are uncovered at low tide, protrude from the ground by about 6.5 ft (2 m). They are implanted in lines of 328 ft (100 m) spaced 11.4 ft (3,50 m). These lines have two hundred simple piles or two hundred and fifty double piles. In the Utah Beach sector, vertical bouchots have replaced table-top mussel farms with higher yields but whose harvesting cannot be mechanized and that are less resistant to the sea.
