The church of Notre-Dame in Epernay is a great survivor: the first church, in Renaissance style, was built in the 16th century. Over time, the church fell into disrepair twice, in 1824 and 1892. The municipality decided to build a new one in 1898. Unfortunately, in July 1918, shells partially destroyed the vault and damaged the facade. The Renaissance stained-glass windows were dismantled and stored in Paris for safekeeping. Restoration was undertaken in 1924, but in the meantime the stained-glass windows were burnt out in a Parisian fire, further reducing the amount of original stained glass.
