Die St. Nicolai Kirche wurde im 11. Jahrhundert als romanische Basilika erbaut und ist heute die evangelisch-lutherische Hauptkirche der Stadt Alfeld. Im 14. Jahrhundert wurde die Kirche als gotische Hallenkirche mit einem zweitürmigen Westbau neu gebaut. Namensgeber ist Nikolaus von Myra, der im Mittelalter Schutzpatron der Schiffer und Kaufleute war.
