The small village of Lentilles, in the Aube department, has one of the most beautiful examples of timber-framed churches in Champagne, the church of Saint-Jacques-et-Saint-Philippe (St. James and St. Philip). The façade is covered with a cladding of essentes and “tavaillons” made of chestnut wood. The 16th-century church is dedicated to St. James, whose stone representation stands proudly in the central bay of the porch. The saint holds a pilgrim’s staff in his left hand, an incentive for the parishioners to join the many pilgrims on the Way of St James.
