Au ixe siècle, selon le récit relaté dans la Concordia de Antealtares écrite vers 1077, vivait un ermite nommé Pelayo (Pélage) qui reçut la révélation du lieu du tombeau de saint Jacques, signalé par des lumières surnaturelles. Alerté, l'évêque d’Iria Flavia (aujourd'hui Padrón), Théodomir, décide trois jours de veille et de prière et ordonne des fouilles au cours desquelles on trouve le « saint corps ».
