Spruces in very snowy areas

In very snowy areas - like here in the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park - the very elongated trunks of common spruces (Picea abies) bear, over their entire height, short branches curving downwards. This well-adapted morphology reduces their snow load and makes the trees more resistant to windfall, that is to say to the risk of uprooting for internal (poor rooting, biological aggression, senescence) or external (snow, storm, lightning ... ) reasons.
