Adapted to cold and humid climates, the common spruce (Picea abies) is a conifer of the Pinaceae family which grows naturally in mountains higher than 1,312 feet (400 metres) in France, and in particular in Auvergne. With its drooping cones, this tall conifer (about 131 feet or 40 metres) differs from fir trees and is easily recognizable by its port, its straight reddish trunk, its conical crown wider at lower altitudes, and its foliage.
