The Polynesian sports often find their source in the secular Ma’ohi culture. They are honored each year in July in the Heiva tu’aro maohi events which bring together traditional sports competitions. The competitors compete in traditional dress, the 'pareu'. On the program are the va'a taie (sailing pirogue) and fruit carrier races as well as the pa'aro ha'ari (copra), amora'a ofai (stone raising), wrestling, tauma ha'ari (coconut palm climbing) and patia ai (javelin throw) contests.
