Despite an over-frequentation of summer tourists, the island of Porquerolles is well-preserved. It owes its particularity to the purchase by the French State of 2,471 out of its 3,089 acres territory (1,000 out of 1,250 ha) in 1971 to counter the threats of the island's urbanization. The State entrusted the management, protection, and sustainable development of these lands to Port-Cros National Park in 1985. They have themselves been listed as a national park since 2012.
