The idea of a museum dedicated to the railway was born at the beginning of the 20th century. The French Railway Museum in Mulhouse was finally established in 1971. At that time, it only housed steam locomotives. It was later expanded with the construction of new buildings. In 2004, the museum closed for several months for a complete transformation. Renamed Cité du Train (City of Train), it reopened in 2005. In the station platform hall, a space is dedicated to steam propulsion. Every 30 minutes, a 232 U 1 locomotive from 1949 sets off with an impressive noise.
