From the heights of Haut-Koenigsbourg castle stands the village of Bergheim. Its first witchcraft trial took place in 1582. Marguerite Möwel was accused, by three advisers, of having committed evil spells. To put an end to her tortures, she confessed to having met a Devil named Rolland. She was mercilessly condemned and brought to her place of execution, 0,6 mi (1 km) away. Between 1620 and 1630, amid the Thirty Years' War, 40% of executions for witchcraft took place in Alsace.
