The polar bear does not hibernate and leads a nomadic life traveling long distances in search of seals. If it happens to fall asleep in wind-sheltered places until it is covered with snow, its bodily functions (heart and respiratory rhythms) are simply slowed down without any lowering of its body's temperature. Its sleep is lighter than hibernation and it can wake up very quickly if necessary.
