As gregarious species, females generally live in small herds of two to ten individuals, whereas male tend to be solitary. It is not territorial and its home ranges often overlap. It is an herbivorous mammal whose diet consists mainly of grass, but also of tender leaves, buds and bark that it reaches by standing on its hind legs. It sometimes follows monkeys groups, such as baboons or vervet monkeys, to feed on fruits and flowers that the primates let fall from the trees.
