Soils rich in carbonates and marine sediments

The drying up of the Couesnon estuary and the construction of dykes enabled the creation of 6,054 acres (2,450 ha) of polders in the Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel. Established between 1856 and 1933 on the prés-salés (salt marshes), their soil is rich in carbonates and marine sediments. Actions are carried out by the Regional Agricultural Development Committee of the Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel in order to strengthen the plant cover in autumn and winter. The use of lopsided oat (Avena strigosa), faba bean (Vicia faba), and lacy phacelia regenerate the soil and prevent the leaking of nitrates into the soil and the groundwater.
