Snow and trees

Snow has an important effect on the vegetation and on the ground. A thick snowpack protects the ground and the low vegetation against excessive frosts and provides a water supply even in winter. It constitutes a vital reserve for trees and also offers them an effective protection against the mechanical consequences of the wind. But the effect of snow can also be harmful to them and break their branches or even entire stands under the load of a too large mass of heavy and wet snow.
